McCracken Driving School offers private, one-on-one, on-the-road driving lessons. Student drivers receive formal instruction and gain actual driving experience from 25 vital driving skill categories. The course consists of four 90 minute lessons. The 6-hour course helps prepare young drivers for a variety of situations and challenges facing them as they begin to operate motorized vehicles on their own. Each lesson focuses on a different driving environment…rural, suburban/city, multiple lanes (ex. Route 19), and interstate highway driving. Each of the lessons also includes instruction and practice to successfully complete parallel parking maneuvers that are required on the Pennsylvania state driver’s license road test.
Upon completion of the 6 hours of behind-the wheel instruction teenage students are provided a certificate of completion. Many auto insurance companies that offer young drivers a safety discount require a minimum of 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training and driver education classroom theory to qualify for reduced rates. This 10% to 20% discount usually remains effective until the driver reaches the age of 21. Please check with your individual auto insurance company. The auto insurance safety discount will offset the cost of the driver education training program relatively quickly.
A “Driver Test Day” service for students is provided after completion their 6 hour of behind-the-wheel training. Students can use a McCracken Driving School vehicle for their driver test exam. This includes round-trip transportation to a PennDOT Driver License Center, review of vital test knowledge, driving the actual exam road course, and parallel parking practice prior to the test.
Note: Refresher courses are available to drivers of all ages.
Students will need to secure their PA Learner's Permit prior to starting behind-the-wheel driving lessons. The Learner’s Permit needs to be in their possession during all lessons.
Why is driver education so important? It is crucial because traffic accidents are one of the leading causes of death for teenagers in the United States today. An effective behind-the-wheel driver education training program teaches new and inexperienced drivers the advanced skills needed for defensive driving. These skills include proper scanning, maintaining attention, speed management in different conditions, hazard detection and anticipation, and quick evaluation of possible safe driving maneuvers.
McCracken Driving School doesn't believe in expensive prepaid packages because packages are generally an advantage for the school, not the student. All lessons are pay-as-you-go with no contract. There are no expensive upfront costs. This allows you to have the flexibility to have as few or as many lessons as you desire or feel is needed. The cost of each 1 ½ hour lesson is $140. This is payable at the time of each lesson. The rate for the “Driver Test Day” service is $165. Cash or check is the preferred payment method.
We require 48 hour advance notice for lesson cancellations, otherwise a $50 fee will apply. Cancellation fee must be paid before any additional lessons are provided.
